Goa chief minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday said the Margao-Mumbai Vande Bharat Express will facilitate faster connectivity between Goa and Mumbai, enhance tourism and growth in the coastal state and provide a comfortable travel experience for the commuters.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday flagged-off five Vande Bharat trains at Rani Kamalapati Railway Station in Madhya Pradesh. These include Bhopal (Rani Kamalapati)-Indore Vande Bharat Express; Bhopal (Rani Kamalapati)-Jabalpur Vande Bharat Express; Ranchi-Patna Vande Bharat Express; Dharwad-Bengaluru Vande Bharat Express and Goa (Margaon)-Mumbai Vande Bharat Express.

Goa (Margao) to Mumbai Vande Bharat Express – Goa’s first Vande Bharat Express – will run between Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Goa’s Margao station and cover a distance of 586 kms. The train is expected to save about one hour of journey time, compared to the current fastest train connecting the two places.

The train will have halts at Dadar, Thane, Panvel, Khed, Ratnagiri, Kankavali stations in Maharashtra and Thivim in Goa.

Speaking at the inauguration event at Margao railway station, Sawant said, “I am grateful to PM Modi and Ashwini Vaishnaw [Union Minister for Railways] for running the Vande Bharat train in the state. This train will facilitate faster connectivity between Goa and Mumbai and boost tourism, trade and especially help people who travel to Mumbai for medical treatment.”

Stating that the Margao railway station will be a gateway railway station for Goa and states in South India, he said, “In the coming months, Manohar International Airport will be connected via direct flights to airports across the country.”

Sawant added that he has requested the Union Minister for Railways to run another Vande Bharat train on the route.

“Currently, due to a single route between Goa and Mumbai, there is one Vande Bharat train. In future, we have requested Ashwini Ji to run additonal train on this route since traffic on this route is high…Double tracking will ease rail operations in Goa,” he added.

Hailing it as an important milestone in improving connectivity of Goa to other states, Goa Tourism minister Rohan Khaunte, said, “Vande Bharat train will help in boosting tourism in the Konkan region and Goa in particular.”
