In a clear sign of changing power equations in the ruling DMK,Chief Minister M Karunanidhi’s heir apparent M K Stalin stole the show as his father celebrated his 86th birthday in Chennai on Wednesday.
Stalin,after being elevated as Deputy Chief Minister by Karunanidhi in a move seen as a signal of anointment of his successor,took complete charge of the celebrations at the party headquarters.
Thousands of party workers as well as central and state ministers thronged the ‘Anna Arivalayam’ to greet the wheel-chair bound octogenarian leader.
Karunanidhi started the day with a visit to the memorials of his mentors,DMK founder late C N Annadurai and rational leader,late E V R Periyar.
Before setting off to his party office,Karunanidhi celebrated the event with his family members including his elder son and Union minister M K Azhagiri,grand nephew and Union minister Dayanidhi Maran and daughter and Rajya Sabha member Kanimozhi.
He also exchanged garlands with his wives Rajathi and Dayalu separately at their residences.
