A 27-year-old youth allegedly used stones to murder a 20-year-old girl in the presence of her younger sister in the forest area under Ramnagar police station of Nainital district late on Saturday evening. Later, the man slit the girl’s throat.

Police arrested one Hari Singh on Monday. Nainital SP Vimmi Sachdeva said post-mortem report confirmed death due to head injuries. He added that Hari was an accused in a rape case lodged by the victim in January 2014. “Later, the girl had got her statement recorded before a magistrate under Section 164 of the CrPC. In her statement, she had accepted that she was in a relationship with the man and did not want action against the accused in the rape case,” Sachdeva told The Indian Express. On the basis of her statement, the police had submitted final report in the rape case in February 2014, he added.

As per preliminary probe, the girl was reportedly pressurising the man to marry her. Police claimed Hari had called the girl in the forest area to talk. Accompanied by her younger sister, the girl went to the forest on Saturday evening. Hari allegedly attacked her with stones and later, slit her throat with a knife. The incident came to light after the victim’s sister returned to the village. The family informed the Chowkidar and subsequently, the girl’s body was recovered.

SP Sachdeva said police recovered the knife and stones used in the crime. He added that police are looking for Hari’s friend Kamal, who had allegedly taken Hari to the crime spot on his motorcycle.

When contacted, the victim’s brother-in-law Neeraj said they wanted to maintain distance from Hari after closure of the rape case. He added Hari had spoken to the victim over phone and said the victim’s cellphone was now in possession of the police.
