The trailer of Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, unveiled earlier this month, transported us to the larger-than-life world of Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who is making his OTT debut with this ambitious series. The show, which will drop on Netflix on May 1, is based on the courtesans of Lahore and the life of the red-light district in undivided India. It features Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Sheikh and Sharmin Segal, among others.
Since the makers announced the series, which speaks of opulence, curiosity around Heeramandi has been increasing by the day. On Sunday, Bhansali Productions and Netflix India dropped glimpses from the series, featuring the women of Heeramandi in contrasting shades.
The carousel post shows the characters in two completely stark lights. “In Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnificent world of Heeramandi, every frame is a painting. Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar premieres 1st May, only on Netflix!,” read the caption of the post.
The first slide begins with a clip, featuring Aditi Rao Hydari, who says, “Ek baar mujare wali nahin, mulk wali ban kar sochiye. (Think like a citizen of India and not like a courtesan).”
Other photos, with the frame divided into halves, show the characters looking delicate and elegant in their avatars as tawaif, but they also throw light on their rebellious, dark and strong sides. In one of the photos, Sonakshi Sinha’s Fareedan looks gorgeous, but the other side of her dark personality is revealed in another shot from the series.
Touted to be an epic saga of love, power, revenge and freedom, Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar has been the filmmaker’s passion project for 14 years. Produced by Bhansali, Prerna Singh with the concept credited to Moin Beg, Heeramandi also marks the return of Fardeen Khan.
