Family Star’s box office collection on day one looks concerning, with the Telugu romantic drama taking a low start at the ticket windows. The Vijay Deverakonda–Mrunal Thakur-starrer clocked Rs 5.75 cr all India nett, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. Family Star, which was also released in a Tamil dubbed version, opened to negative reviews and this was reflected in its opening. The occupancy throughout the day failed to touch even 5o percent. This is Vijay’s lowest opening in recent years.
His last few releases opened to double digit figures–Kushi clocked Rs 15.25 cr, Liger was 15.95 cr, Dear Comrade stood at Rs 11.90 cr while World Famous Lover netted RS 7 cr. Family Star, which was moved from its earlier Sankranthi release to avoid competition, will now hope to salvage its chances of success in the next two days.
The film is important for Vijay Deverakonda, as the star hasn’t had a hit in years since Taxiwaala in 2018. While most of of his films have almost always taken a healthy start owing to his fan following, the collections have not been able to match the pre-release hype.
This was also Mrunal Thakur’s first film with Vijay, after her two successful Telugu releases– Nani’s Hi Nanna and Dulquer Salmaan-starrer romantic drama Sita Ramam. In their review for the Indian Express, Raghu Bandi called Family Star a film suffering from an “utterly dated” story with the treatment displaying “no spark.”
“Given the film is designed as a blockbuster with Dil Raju producing, the middle-class sensibilities often slip, revealing it to be the big extravaganza it was always meant to be. Even that would have been acceptable to the Telugu audience if the film was entertaining. However, Petla favours style over substance, delivering a simplified film that is often bland,” the review read.
