There are a lot of rumours surrounding RRR’s Oscar win. Several reports suggested the makers had spent about Rs 80 crore for the Oscar campaign, and some others claimed that the team bought the Academy Award. Putting an end to all such speculation, SS Karthikeya, the son of SS Rajamouli, who spearheaded the Oscar campaign of RRR, revealed the amount that was spent on the film since the time it started creating momentum among foreign audiences.
In an interview with Galatta Plus, Karthikeya said, “We had plans to wrap up things in Rs 5 crore but we ended up spending Rs 8.5 crore for the campaign. Special screenings were arranged in a couple of cities in the USA for RRR. We thought we need more shows in New York where we were lagging behind.”
SS Karthikeya revealed that a significant amount in such campaigns are spent on screenings, where the voters are invited to watch the film. He said that all the RRR screenings were houseful shows and he was told that it has never happened before.
Addressing the rumour that the RRR team bought the Oscars for an enormous amount, he said, “Buying an Oscar itself is a joke. I mean it is a 95-year-old institution and there’s a process. Also, you can buy the audience’s love. You can’t buy what Steven Spielberg said about the film… you can’t buy what James Cameron said about the film. When those big people spoke about the movie, it became a phenomenon.”
RRR song “Naatu Naatu“, which was composed by MM Keeravaani, won both the Golden Globe and Oscar for Best Original Song. The feature film became the first Indian production to win an Oscar. Along with RRR, the documentary The Elephant Whisperers won the Oscar for Best Documentary Short Film.
