Director Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s 2017 Telugu film Arjun Reddy was loved by the audience and brought much acclaim to actor Vijay Deverakonda. However, the movie’s Hindi remake Kabir Singh, starring Shahid Kapoor, was panned by film critics who called out Vanga for the film’s misogynistic tone. In the latest episode of Nijam with Smita, the director said that the sensibility of film critics in Hindi belt and Telugu states is different.

Talking about the difference in the way both the films were received, the director said, “It didn’t affect me but funnily what I thought was it was the same film, frame to frame copy. Nobody said it’s a misogynistic film. I will tell you a funny episode. An organisation gave Arjun Reddy 5/5 but gave 0/5 to Kabir Singh. So, what I got to know is that the persons who reviewed the film are different with different sensibilities between our (Telugu) reviewers and their reviewers.”

During an interview with Film Companion, Sandeep Reddy Vanga had justified the protagonists hitting each other in the film by calling it ‘their expression of love’. He had said, “When you are deeply in love and deeply connected to a woman (and vice versa), if you don’t have the liberty of slapping each other, then I don’t see anything there. She slapped him without a reason, at least Kabir had a reason to slap her. If you can’t slap, if you can’t touch your woman wherever you want, if you can’t kiss, I don’t see emotion there.”

When host Smita asked him if he still believes that people in love can hit each other, Vanga once again justified his statement.

He said, “It depends. I mean if kids are born and parents are slapping each other, it will be considered domestic violence. From the kids’ perspective, they will feel my parents are always fighting. I was talking about people in college at a particular age. When a boy and a girl are thinking about showing their worst side, there is nothing unconditional about it. If it’s not unconditional then I don’t consider it a great love story. I said it in that context but it was not seen in that light. After one or two such incidents, they’ll understand if I raise my hand, she will also retaliate so they’ll be in control.”

Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s next directorial is Animal starring Ranbir Kapoor, Anil Kapoor and Rashmika Mandanna. He will also be helming Allu Arjun’s film produced by Bhushan Kumar.
