There are many who say 2024 is definitely the year of Telugu cinema considering the humongous success of Pushpa 2: The Rule and Kalki 2898 AD. However, maverick filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has an interesting take on the same. In an interaction for his YouTube channel, RGV said, “Honestly, I don’t think we must connect the rise with a single year. A film’s process takes 4-5 years from ideation, inception, and execution, right? Also, we made around 150 Telugu films, and only one or two makes the cut. What about the others?”

Interestingly, Ram Gopal Varma also spoke about the true impact of the SS Rajamouli brand of films. “In fact, I’d go on to say that the entire Telugu cinema cannot take the full credit. It is one man… SS Rajamouli. He could have been from Tamil cinema or Malayalam, or even Gujarati. It is just a coincidence that he is from Telugu cinema. Well, he made Baahubali, and set an important benchmark,” said RGV, adding, “Baahubali wasn’t just about the grandeur, but also about making filmmakers believe that budgets could be recovered.”
The filmmaker also pointed out that there have been many films that tried to replicate the success of Baahubali, but they hardly delivered similar results. “Baahubali also proved that people wouldn’t turn up to theatres if the big-ticket films didn’t have great production values. But it wasn’t enough if films just had big visuals, great vfx, lavish sets, etc… After Baahubali, many people tried to do similar films, but it ended up badly right,” said RGV, adding that the Baahubali makers took a leap of faith because Rajamouli proved his credentials with Magadheera.
“Filmmakers started to believe that if they spent enough money on making a great movie, they can recover the costs. That confidence was given by Rajamouli,” signed off Ram Gopal Varma.
