Anupamaa actor Rupali Ganguly is the daughter of the famous filmmaker Anil Ganguly and sister of Bollywood choreographer Vijay Ganguly. Recently, she shared how her family lost all their money after several of her father’s films flopped consecutively at the box office. Rupali also revealed the fees she received for her first theatre play.
In 1991, Anil Ganguly directed Dharmendra-led Dushman Devta, which tanked at the box office, leading to a money crunch in the family. Rupali told Mashable India, “I used to walk from Worli to Prithvi Theatre (a distance of almost 15 km) because my father’s films flopped and we were wiped out. Everything that he had was sold. He made one film called Dushman Devta with Dharmendra and it flopped. My father got diabetes because of stress and a lot of other things happened at that time. We lost all the money.”
Rupali shared that back n those days, filmmakers invested their personal assets to make films as there was no “corporate system”. She added, “It was the time when films were made from a filmmaker’s money, by selling the home, jewellery and mortgaging the home, that was the fashion, that was passion.”
The actor, who gained prominence in the television industry with her role as Monisha Sarabhai in the hit sitcom Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai and later with Anupamaa, also did theatre plays. She revealed, “My first play was Atmakatha at Prithvi Theatre and it was produced by Dinesh Thakur. I started my theatre journey with him. I was paid Rs 50 for my first play, and sometimes I also used to get samosa. It was a lot of money.”
In the early 2000s, Rupali appeared in a negative role in the Star Plus medical drama Sanjivani. Since 2020, she has been the face of Star Plus’ show Anupamaa. It is one of the most successful shows running on television currently.
