Actor Rupali Ganguly recalled how terrified she was when she began working on the hit sitcom Sarabhai vs Sarabhai. And it showed in her performance, at least initially. She said in a new interview that her co-stars jokingly started a betting pool on set about how many retakes she’d have to give because she couldn’t get the job done. She said that this only made her more nervous.
But she had only the nicest things to say about her co-stars, particularly Satish Shah and Ratna Pathak Shah. In an appearance on The Ranveer Show podcast, Rupali recalled anecdotes about working on Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, which became a cult hit on television, and made her a household name.
She said, “I was doing four shows at the time, and after working for 20 days on serious show, the 10 days on Sarabhai were therapy. I was terrified of working with comedy icons like Satish Shah and Ratna Pathak Shah. I’d just done Sanjivani, where I had to do a lot of drama. I was okay with that, but I was very new to comedy. Pehle chaar episode pe mujhpe boli lagti thi, ke yeh kitna retake maaregi (In the first four episodes, they started a betting pool, about how many retakes I’d have to give). Satish kaka had started this. When someone does this, you get more nervous.”
Rupali recalled that the actors used to share rooms at the time, and she was assigned a room with Ratna. “I was petrified,” she said, adding, “I am walking chaos, and Ratna ji is meticulous. I gave the bigger bed to her, I gave the bigger mirror to her. I wanted to learn from her. All my stuff was in ‘plastic ki thailis’. She walked in the first day, and said, ‘I suggest you take this bed, because you have a lot of stuff’.”
Rupali said that she loves Ratna, and recalled how the veteran actor begrudgingly told her that she’d take care of a stray kitten that Rupali had rescued from the street one time. Ratna was initially aghast that Rupali was walking around the set with a kitten, and was hiding it under her bed, but later told her that her son Imaad had grown fond of it, and would take care of it.
Sarabhai vs Sarabhai originally ran from 2004 to 2006. A revival series was released in 2017 to less favourable reception.
