On the occasion of actor-filmmaker Silambarasan TR’s 42nd birthday, it is raining updates about his upcoming films. First up, it was announced that Silambarasan was joining hands with director Ramkumar Balakrishnan, who made a rather impressive debut with the Harish Kalyan film Parking. The movie, tentatively titled STR 49, is backed by Aakash Baskaran’s Dawn Pictures.
Announcing the movie, the makers also shared a first look poster that featured the profile look of Silambarasan as he carries an engineering book that has a bloodied butcher knife lodged inside. The poster comes with the tagline — The MOST WANTED student — and seems to be a rather engaging mix of campus story and an action drama. Silambarasan is not new to action-packed campus stories, but it would be interesting to see how he fits into this world as a 42-year-old, and Ramkumar has proven his credentials as a filmmaker who won’t just present a run-of-the-mill story.

Interestingly, the Ramkumar Balakrishnan-STR film has replaced Ashwath Marimuthu’s movie as STR 49. However, this doesn’t mean that Silambarasan’s Ashwath film with AGS Productions is in any problem. This project has been bumped up as STR 48, and the Desingh Periasamy movie that had been carrying that label for a while now, has been pushed as STR 50, which marks Silambarasan’s debut as a producer.
Expressing his happiness in helming STR 49, Ramkumar took to social media to share photos with the birthday boy, and wrote, “From fanboy to directing you, heart is filled with gratitude & excitement. Happy birthday to our beloved ST⭐️R sir. Wishing you a year filled with love, success, and blockbuster hits.”

Meanwhile, Dawn Pictures and Aakash Baskaran seem to be the production company on fire right now in Tamil cinema as they are not only backing this project, but also Dhanush’s upcoming directorial, Idly Kadai, and Sivakarthikeyan’s landmark 25th film, Parasakthi, helmed by Sudha Kongara.
Apart from the films with Ashwath, Ramkumar, and Desingh, Silambarasan is also playing a pivotal role in Mani Ratnam-Kamal Haasan’s Thug Life, which marks the reunion of the Nayagan duo after 38 years. The movie is set to release on June 5.
