It is beautiful how Indian cinema is finally trying to explore the various shades of love onscreen without fixating on hetero-normative portrayal of love and its machinations. Just a few days ago, we saw the teaser of debut filmmaker Varsha Bharath’s Bad Girl creating quite the furore. And now, Lens director Jayaprakash Radhakrishnan is coming to the big screen with his film, Kaadhal Enbadhu Podhu Udamai. The film, starring Lijomol Jose, Anusha, Vineeth, and Rohini, is set to hit the screens on February 14. The rather simple trailer doesn’t play the cards too close to the chest, and reveals that it is a story of a same sex couple.
In the trailer, we see Vineeth and Rohini play a divorced couple, who are forced to reunite briefly to tackle the subject of their daughter’s sexual orientation. We see the various stages of them trying to coerce Lijomol’s character out of this “problem” and how she remains steadfast, and at the same time, not sure if the light at the end of this tunnel would be truly worth it. There are other interesting characters, played by Kalesh and Deepa, who could represent the various questions that might arise from watching films about the queer community.
WATCH TRAILER:
Kaadhal Enbadhu Podhu Udamai, which was an official selection for the Indian Panorama of the 54th International Film Festival, 2023, is a social drama that is bound to ruffle quite a few feathers, and it is par for the course. The need for amplification of such stories is more vital than ever due to the kind of toxicity the community faces in real life, and on social media.
With cinematography by Sree Saravanan, and music by Kannan Narayanan, Kaadhal Enbadhu Podhu Udamai is presented by Kaathal filmmaker Jeo Baby. Incidentally, we just recently saw the backlash that the teaser of Bad Girl received, especially for its rather ‘bold’ exploration of a woman’s sexual desire and freedom.
Kaadhal Enbadhu Podhu Udamai releases on Valentine’s Day.
