Karthik Subbaraj is back with another film about a gangster wanting to make a movie. In 2014, Karthik came up with a gangster film that redefined the genre for the Tamil industry. The first part titled Jigarthanda, set in Madurai, was about an aspiring filmmaker named Karthik (Siddharth) stalking a dreaded gangster named Assault Sethu (Bobby Simha). Things turn bad when Karthik gets caught by the gangster, who demands to make a film with him in the lead role.
Now, in the second part titled Jigarthanda DoubleX, set in the 70s, another gangster named Pandiyan (Raghava Lawrence) wants to act in a film and give tough competition to Clint Eastwood. He chooses Ray Dwason (SJ Suryah), who claims to be an erstwhile assistant of cinema icon Satyajit Ray. As opposed to the first part, here the filmmaker is onboard with the gangster. However, the conflict arises from the outside. Shine Tom Chacko plays the role of the antagonist, who wants to do away with the gangster once and for all.
Jigarthanda DoubleX, which will hit screens on November 17, also has a lot of meta dialogues taking a dig at the current trend of cinema. Karthik Subbaraj takes a dig at pan-Indian cinema. Later, a character asks why Ray is not making films about good people, and he says, “People don’t like films about good people anymore.” The dig is at all the gangster films including Jigarthanda DoubleX itself.
Santhosh Narayanan is back to his prime form in the film. The music composer’s background score was a huge reason for the success of the first part, and looks like he will do the same for the second part as well.
