Rajinikanth's Coolie races far ahead of Jr NTR and Hrithik Roshan's War 2 in advance booking.

Coolie vs War 2 advance booking: The eve of this Independence Day will see the clash of two action thrillers — Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Tamil crime drama Coolie, starring Rajinikanth, and Ayan Mukerji’s Bollywood spy thriller War 2, starring Hrithik Roshan, Kiara Advani and Jr NTR. As of four days before the release, the advance booking of Coolie is far higher than that of War 2.

The advance sales of Coolie in India stand at Rs 10.7 crore. This includes Rs 10 crore in the native Tamil language, around Rs 4 lakh, Rs 1.5 lakh, and Rs 40,000 in the dubbed Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada versions, respectively. Combined with the block bookings of around Rs 6 crore, the total advance booking of Coolie in India currently stands at Rs 16.15 crore.

As per trade tracker Sacnilk, the advance sales of War 2 isn’t even a patch on that of Coolie. Its advance booking figure of Rs 30.28 lakh includes Rs 28 lakh in the native Hindi version, along with Rs 1.3 lakh and Rs 70,000 in the dubbed Tamil and Telugu versions, respectively. It’s also added Rs 60,000 in the IMAX 2D Hindi version. Combined with the block booking, the current advance sales figure of War 2 in India stands at Rs 1.22 crore.

The advance booking figure of War 2 pales not only in comparison to that of Coolie, but also that of previous YRF Spy Universe installments like Siddharth Anand’s War (2019) and Pathaan (2023), and Manish Sharma’s Tiger 3 (2023). It’s even lower than Yash Raj Films’ previous blockbuster outing, Mohit Suri’s romantic drama Saiyaara.

Its Telugu chunk of Rs 70,000 is surprisingly low, given War 2 stars Telugu superstar Jr NTR as the chief antagonist. On the other hand, the Hindi chunk of Coolie at Rs 4 lakh is quite impressive, given it’s even higher than the Telugu share. Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan makes a cameo appearance in the Rajinikanth-starrer which is likely to hint at his future standalone spin-off with Lokesh Kanagaraj, which is expected to go on floors next year.

Coolie is backed by production house Sun Pictures. The Lokesh Kanagaraj directorial, which marks Rajinikanth’s 171st film, also stars Nagarjuna and Shruti Haasan. It also coincides with Rajinikanth’s 50 years in the film industry. Anirudh Ravichander has composed the music for the movie.

Meanwhile, War 2 is the sequel to the blockbuster War, which starred Hrithik Roshan, Tiger Shroff, Ashutosh Rana, and Vaani Kapoor. Roshan and Rana reprise their roles of a superspy and his boss in the sequel, whereas Kiara Advani joins the cast as the former’s love interest. Shah Rukh Khan is also expected to pop up for a cameo, in the capacity of Pathaan. Backed by Aditya Chopra, War 2 marks Ayan Mukerji’s maiden directorial stint outside of Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions.
