Diljit Dosanjh’s Kufar choreographers defend ‘vulgar’ leg shot, say Diljit and Manushi Chillar knew: ‘We were told to make the song…’

After receiving a massive backlash for a vulgar step in Diljit Dosanjh and Manushi Chillar's song Kufar, the song's choreographers have reacted to the ongoing controversy.

Diljit Dosanjh‘s latest song, Kufar, featuring Manushi Chillar, recently courted controversy over a controversial dance step. The audience objected to a step where Diljit is standing behind a woman who lifts her leg on the line ‘jannat ke darwaaze kudiye’ in the song, with many calling out blatant objectification. As the controversy escalated, both Manushi and Diljit addressed the backlash and distanced themselves from the step.

Neither of the artists took the onus of the step, and now Kufar’s choreographers, Shazia Samji and Piyush Bhagat, have reacted to the sequence. In a podcast with Hindi Rush, Shazia and Piyush stood by their choreography, saying that their brief was to make the song ‘sexy’. They also said that everyone on the set — including the actors — were aware of the choreography and aligned with it.

Talking about the ‘jannat ke darwaaze’ line, Shazia said, “Firstly, Diljit’s song Kufar is great and the Jannat Ke Darwaaze sequence that you are talking about was actually our favorite portion. It’s a hookline, and Diljit has sung it very nicely, so that part was going to connect with the audience. When we heard the song for the first time, we thought that sequence was great. What can we say further if the audience has picked that part?” Piyush also added, “It’s teamwork, when you make the concept, you’re arranging the steps and shooting for it, everyone knows what’s happening from the DOP, the star, to the dancers, everyone on the set is aware. I think it was meant to happen.”

Addressing the controversy, Piyush also added, “Some people perceived it a certain way, and it’s their perspective; it’s a very sexy song, very international. Diljit is an international artist, and he is at number one. Not just the people in Punjab, but people all over the globe are watching him. He is catering to different cultures. If you see the song’s teaser, it’s written there, ‘Are you ready for a sexy dance?’ I don’t see anything negative in it; it was fun.” Adding to this, Shazia shared, “We just got one brief for the song, that it’s a sexy song. Some people pick these things, but eventually they are talking about the song only, both negatives and positives are always said.”

Reacting to the trolling, Piyush and Shazia also defended Diljit Dosanjh and Manushi Chillar. Piyush said, “If the trolling starts affecting you, then you won’t be able to be creative. The same goes for Diljit Paaji too; if he takes these things so seriously, he will have to start doubting every line then. If you become so critical, how will you get comfortable with flowing?” Shazia added, “Manushi was the main lead in the song; she was also trolled so much. She wasn’t even the girl who did that step; it was one of my best dancers. And even if it was Manushi, I don’t think it would have been a big issue. She actually got late, was getting ready in the vanity, otherwise she would have done it. As an artist, even Diljit was just performing there; it wasn’t like he did something, or it happened because of him.”

Summing up their take on the issues, Piyush added, “The shooting was fun, it was like a theater performance going on. The girls were too good. But it is all about how you look at it.”

Manushi Chillar and Diljit Dosanjh react to the controversy

As the trolling around the step and the line from the song only intensified, actress Manushi Chillar spoke about it in a long post on X. She wrote, “Not mine #iykyk. But can we please not disrespect the dancer who was simply doing her job?” In another tweet, she wrote about her experience from the shoot, “Sometimes the most spontaneous moments turn into the most memorable ones. I had just recovered from the flu, hadn’t been working out, and honestly didn’t feel ready in any way to be in front of the camera, especially in this avatar! But when @diljitdosanjh‘s song came along, everyone around me had so much confidence in me.”

“From learning the choreography in 6 hours to putting the costumes together in half a day, it was all such a whirlwind… and before I knew it, we were on set shooting! It was exhausting, exciting, and completely worth it, a reminder that sometimes you just have to trust the process (and the people who believe in you) and take the leap,” Manushi had added.

Diljit also reacted to the controversy in a live video. He said, “Bruh, mai ta othe khada si aase paase pata ni ki challi janda si (Bro, I was just standing there, I didn’t even know what was going on around me).”
