Tillu Square movie review: Siddhu Jonnalagadda, Anupama Parameshwaran shine in this laugh riot

Tillu Square review: Tillu Square is filled with punchy one-liners. Most of them refer generously to DJ Tillu. If you have seen the first part, your enjoyment of this film might be multifold. Even otherwise, the comedy here is excellent.

Siddhu Jonnalagadda, Anupama Parameshwaran in Tillu SquareSiddhu Jonnalagadda, Anupama Parameshwaran's Tillu Square has hit screens across India.

DJ Tillu was one of the big hits of 2022. Siddhu Jonnalagadda, the lead actor of the film, who was also credited with the writing and screenplay, became a sought-after actor overnight. It was his unique mannerisms, Hyderabadi lingo and Neha Sharma’s daring act that gave the film a cult following. “Atluntadi mana thoti…Radhika” became part of youth conversations. No other film has since used the bindaas Hyderabadi andaaz like DJ Tillu.

In the sequel of the urban crime comedy, Siddhu reprises his screen and writing roles. Anupama Parameshwaran replaces Neha Sharma, and Mallik Ram takes over from director Vimal Krishna.

Tillu Square begins by reminding us of the highlights of DJ Tillu. Tillu’s identity and his image as a DJ are also re-established. A song or two quickly follow, using the music and lyric style from the first film. Tillu runs into Lilly (Anupama Parameshwaran), and a romance ensues between them. The openness of the flirting and romance goes a notch up here, before it abruptly ends. Head over heels in love, Tillu desperately searches for Lilly. She becomes an enigma he cannot get over.

Soon a twist in the love story is revealed as Tillu and Lilly bump into each other again. Tillu’s vow to never marry is forcibly amended, and a marriage is planned between them. But the perfect-looking bride Lilly is so unbelievably true that Tillu is always waiting for some disaster to strike. When the disaster truly arrives, it brings back lots of his mistakes and characters from his old life again, along with some new headaches. The biggest threat is the dreaded mafia don Shaik Mahmood (Murali Sharma). Who is Lilly, what is her connection with a mafia don, why DJ Tillu is dragged into this situation and how he comes out of it forms the rest of the story.

Tillu Square is filled with punchy one-liners. Most of them refer generously to DJ Tillu. If you have seen the first part, your enjoyment of this film might be multifold. Even otherwise, the comedy here is excellent. The comedy writing in recent Telugu cinema has really picked up and this film might the best example of that. Every situation is designed with the specific focus to entertain and the comedy is entirely shouldered by Siddhu. The Hyderabadi bindaas andaaz and carefree attitude go up many levels from the first film. If he doesn’t do a different film soon, it might become difficult to accept Siddhu in any other role.

The songs and background score perfectly add to the mood. Though very similar to DJ Tillu’s, the music here is much more entertaining. Ram Miriyala’s energetic voice adds to the lively portrayal of Tillu’s character by Siddhu. Anupama’s daring act was appealing initially, but as the other shades of the character are revealed, the allure of the bold Anupama disappears. Neha Sharma’s return as Radhika was well-designed and entertains again. Muralidhar Goud as the father gets good screen time and does well. Many other roles just add to the drama being weaved by Tillu.
