Moonwalk trailer: It’s highly doubtful that any other musical artiste has had as significant an impact on the global masses as American singer-songwriter and dancer Michael Jackson, particularly during the 1980s and ’90s. Jackson’s songs and dance moves not only left a lasting impression on his fans but also inspired many to imitate him, believing that successfully emulating his work, considering its difficulty, would bring them immense fame. The Michael Jackson wave hit Kerala too, just like many other parts of the world, and he quickly became a sensation among the youth. Debutant filmmaker Vinod AK’s Moonwalk, set in the 80s and 90s, tells the story of a bunch of MJ fans who dream of achieving big in life by becoming dancers as skilled as their beloved icon.
The much-delayed movie, which went on floors in 2020, is finally set to see the light of day, thanks to ace Malayalam filmmaker Lijo Jose Pellissery and producer Listin Stephen, who have joined Moonwalk. While the movie is brought to theatres by Lijo, Listin has been credited as co-producer with Jasni Ahamad. Now, almost four years after its first trailer arrived, Team Moonwalk has unveiled another trailer announcing its official release date.
The 154-second promo video begins by showing a bunch of kids playing Jackson’s “Thriller” on a VCR player. A cassette of Padayottam (1982) can also be seen nearby, establishing the era of the movie. Soon, we find out that they are not just obsessed with MJ as fans but also wish to ace his dance moves. From arm wave and popping to splits, the youths in Thiruvananthapuram are shown going all out to establish themselves as exceptional talents and thus showcasing their abilities at the All Kerala Breakdance Competition. But their journey is far from easy, as they must also navigate a host of personal and life challenges.
Set against the backdrop of the breakdance wave that gripped the youth around the world in the 80s and 90s, the film, which features over 100 newcomers in key roles, will hit theatres in Kerala on May 23. Moonwalk stars a group of energetic youngsters who have made dance a part of their lives. Penned by director Vinod himself along with Mathew Varghis and Sunil Gopalakrishnan, Ansar Shah has served as the movie’s cinematographer. Moonwalk boasts music by Prashant Pillai, editing by Deepu Joseph and Kiran Das, and art direction by Sabu Mohan.
