After a brief hiatus, Malayalam superstar Mammootty is set to return to the big screen with the crime drama Kalamkaval, which reunites him with Vinayakan, following their collaboration in the 2010 film Best Actor. The movie, directed by debutant Jithin K Jose, known for penning Dulquer Salmaan’s Kurup, will reportedly feature Mammootty portraying a character with negative shades after a long gap, while Vinayakan takes on the role of the conventional lead. This intriguing casting reversal has made Kalamkaval one of Mammootty’s most highly anticipated projects.
The Kalamkaval teaser opens with the intriguing question, “Neenge Aru? (Who are you?)”, before cutting to a police officer searching for a mysterious man named Nathu. Vinayakan appears to be playing the cop leading the investigation. The teaser then shifts to a striking shot of Mammootty, looking sharper than ever and exuding a devilish energy as he stares straight into the camera.
Sharing the teaser of Kalamkaval, the makers wrote on social media, “Every story has a side you don’t expect 🔥 Presenting the Official teaser of #Kalamkaval.”
Speaking about Mammootty’s performance in the film, director Jithin K Jose earlier told Mathrubhumi, “Kalamkaaval gave him ample scope to explore the layers of emotion, and he approached it with full enthusiasm. Watching him transform into the character on set was a privilege.”
Kalamkaval, bankrolled by Mammootty’s production house, Mammootty Kampany, is said to be inspired by real-life events. The film features cinematography by Faisal Ali, while Mujeeb Majeed, of Kishkinda Kaandam fame, is handling the music. As of now, there has been no official confirmation regarding the film’s release date.
On the work front, apart from Kalamkaaval, Mammootty also has Patriot, co-starring Mohanlal, in the pipeline.
