Lokah: Chapter 1- Chandra has been getting rave reviews and unanimous love from the audience worldwide and has quietly dominated the Onam festival box office in Malayalam cinema this season. The superhero origin story, directed by Dominic Arun, features Kalyani Priyadarsan in the lead role, alongside supporting performances from Naslen, Sandy, and a handful of star cameos. The film, bankrolled by Wayfarer Studios, owned by Dulquer Salman, has already created havoc at the box office, crossing a worldwide collection of Rs 63 crore by the end of its first weekend, according to reports by Hindustan Times. These are gigantic numbers and the first of their kind for a female-led blockbuster from Malayalam cinema, as per the trades. Kalyani Priyadarshan also plays the female lead in Fahad Faasil starrer madcap comedy ‘Odum Kuthira Chaadum Kuthira’, directed by Althaf Salim, which released alongside Lokah.
Priyadarshan, acclaimed filmmaker and father to the leading lady, recently responded to On Manorma online about his daughter’s back-to-back big big-ticket releases, “She only tells me about her projects after she completes them. It’s the same with her latest releases.” He also added,” I’m happy that both her films are releasing together.” The Hera Pheri director also added, “She is the kind of person who will update you on her latest projects only after wrapping them up and showing up at home.” The film industries across the board have been reacting positively to Lokah: Chapter 1 across the weekend, with rave reviews coming in from everywhere. A super enthusiastic review posted by Director Sanjay Gupta on social media read, “Dear All, Go watch, LOKAH Chapter 1: CHANDRA N O W ! !! BEST INDIAN FILM IN THE LAST FEW YEARS”
Lokah Chapter 1 – Chandra is an unconventional superhero origins story that deals with a loner vampire on the run, who is forced to take on a corrupt cop after a series of misunderstandings blow her cover. The film, despite its lower budget, manages to captivate with its neon-lit imagery and economical world-building. The film tactfully combines elements of Kerala’s rich cultural heritage and mythology with the superhero implications, thus forming its very own specific genre hybrid. The film has a musical score by Jakes Bejoy, whereas Nimish Ravi handles the cinematography. Lokah is being hailed as the first film in an upcoming franchise of superhero films, with the next starring Tovino Thomas in the lead.
