Following a relatively quiet first quarter, the Indian box office is gearing up for its first major showdown of 2025, as three highly anticipated big-budget films are set to release in the same weekend, just days apart. While actor Prithviraj Sukumaran’s third directorial venture, the Mohanlal-starrer L2: Empuraan, will hit the screens on March 27 (Thursday), in a direct clash with SU Arun Kumar’s “Chiyaan” Vikram-led Veera Dheera Sooran, AR Murugadoss’ Sikandar, featuring Salman Khan, will arrive on March 30 (Sunday), taking the Eid season battle to the next level.
While the team behind all three films are excited for the high-stakes face-off, Tamil star Vikram has even more reason to celebrate — not only is one of his own films releasing, but he also gets to catch the most awaited film in the career of one of his all-time favourite actors, Mohanlal. Interestingly, Vikram’s wife Shailaja Balakrishnan is an even bigger Mohanlal fan. Recently, the actor found himself in a tricky spot when asked which film Shailaja had planned to watch first: her husband’s Veera Dheera Sooran or her favourite star’s Empuraan.
“I asked her which film she would watch first, and she said she would watch both. I will watch both too, but I don’t know which one she will watch first. I speak a little bit of Malayalam; she speaks very well. Now, there is no Malayalam, Tamil, or Telugu, it’s all the same in India. Different languages, different cultures, let’s just enjoy it,” he said during a chat with media in Kerala. He also expressed his hope that both films will be embraced equally by audiences.
Also starring SJ Suryah, Suraj Venjaramoodu and Dushara Vijayan, Veera Dheera Sooran is bankrolled by Riya Shibu under the banner of HR Pictures. The film’s cinematography is handled by Theni Eswar, with editing by Prasanna GK and music by GV Prakash Kumar.
One of the most anticipated Indian movies of 2025, Empuraan is the second installment in a planned trilogy that began with Prithviraj’s directorial debut Lucifer (2019). Besides Mohanlal and Prithviraj, the film will see Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas and Indrajith Sukumaran reprising their roles from the first installment.
