Close to four decades after we first met agent Ethan Hunt on the big screen, the character seems to be gearing up to hang up his boots in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, the eighth and purportedly final film in the Tom Cruise-fronted spy franchise. After being in production for years, the film is set to hit theatres worldwide on May 23, 2025. Incidentally, the first film hit the screens on May 22, 1986. The first trailer for the hotly-anticipated action film was unveiled on Monday, teasing a high-stakes adventure that sends Ethan on a mission that could endanger the lives of those he loves.

The film serves as a direct sequel to 2023’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1. In fact, it was originally titled Dead Reckoning Part 2 before Paramount decided against it. The voiceover in the trailer, which is packed with everything that is expected of a Mission Impossible film, reveals that Ethan’s past is finally catching up with him, and he has to pay the cost of his actions over all these years.

Here’s the trailer:

We see Tom Cruise running like the wind, jumping from buildings, vrooming in bikes, and hanging from flying aircraft like it is just another Monday. There is, of course, the famed voiceover that gives Ethan the illusion of choice in choosing a mission, and Cruise rounding up the action-packed trailer with the line, “I ask you all to trust me, one last time.” We have been hooked on to this belief since 1986, and things have always worked in favour of us, and almost everyone around Ethan.

Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who also directed the last three films in the franchise, The Final Reckoning, features Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Hayley Atwell, Vanessa Kirby, and Esai Morales reprising their roles from previous Mission: Impossible films.
