The Sexiest Man Alive competition hosted by People magazine has given readers and fans some very interesting winners over the years. From Office’s John Krasinski to Creed’s Michael B. Jordan, some highly accomplished and loved entertainers have been rewarded with the crown. But this time around the publication has created history by giving the world its first openly gay winner in actor Jonathan Bailey.
Known for his roles in the Netflix series Bridgerton and films like Jurassic World Rebirth and Wicked, Bailey has quietly built a space for himself in an otherwise saturated line of work. The aforementioned publication released a full interview with Bailey, where he shared some of his little idiosyncrasies with his fans, including some plans for the future.

Recalling the first instance when he realised that people knew about him, Bailey said, “I had the radio set for my alarm, and one morning it went off with, ‘Here’s the news at 7. But just before we go, can we talk about Jonathan Bailey?’ I was like, ‘Where is my journal? Is this real?’ It was wild.”
Bailey admitted that he hadn’t told anyone about the win, except for his dog Benson. He said, “I think a lot of my friends will give me a lot of grief. They’ll be furious that I haven’t told them. And then they’ll just squeal with delight. They’ve seen me grow up. Behind the mask of being identified as a sexy man are other truths that they know and they’ve witnessed. They know the secrets.” When asked if he was lying about telling anyone, Bailey turned the question back at the interviewee and said, “How do you spell NDA (Non Disclosure Agreement)?”
He shared that he’s scared of snakes and that he would like to go back to college. Bailey revealed that he had enrolled himself in an open university but was expelled because he couldn’t finish all the courses. “I signed up for about nine different courses, not realising if you didn’t finish them, you get expelled. So I didn’t finish my volcanoes and tsunami course or my Leonardo da Vinci course. I did finish my music course, but just at that point, I got expelled. Hopefully that’ll be something I can go back to.”

Obviously this makes Bailey the first openly gay actor to have won the title, having come out publicly in 2018. During an old interview with GQ, Bailey revealed that many people warned him to keep his sexuality a secret. “There are two things we don’t want to know: if you’re an alcoholic or if you’re gay. All it takes is for one of those people in that position of power to say that, and it ripples through. So, yeah, of course I thought that. Of course I thought that in order to be happy I needed to be straight.”
About the competition itself, it started back in 1985, and the first recipient was actor Mel Gibson. Actors like Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Johnny Depp, and Richard Gere have all won the title twice. James Bond actor Sean Connery became the oldest recipient when he won the title at age 59. Tom Cruise became the youngest winner at 27 years old, while John F. Kennedy and David Beckham are the only non-entertainers to have won.
