The trailer of Anemone is out now, with Academy Award winner Daniel Day Lewis commanding the spotlight. The interesting bit is that the project is being helmed by Daniel’s son, Ronan Day-Lewis, who is a sophomore in the directorial game after heading the film The Sheep and The Wolf in 2018.
The trailer showcases a world that is dark, isolated and confusing upon the first glance. Not much is revealed about the identities of the characters, but Daniel Day Lewis seems to be playing Ray Stocker, an “invisible man”, who is running from the past, something several characters hint at through the trailer. Sean Bean, who, presumably, plays Daniel’s brother, is seen confronting him about what happened “back then”, while Samantha Morton’s character says this line in the middle of the trailer: “Ray never spoke to me about what happened over there.”
Paintings of Irish protesters standing against armed men keep flashing on the screen, while Daniel Day Lewis’ character talks about how the Army transforms you into a human being who can bear anything. We get a glimpse of another conflict that is central to the film, the relationship between a father and son, as Samuel Bottomley’s character asks why his father left his family. Daniel seems to be playing an ex-Army officer who once experienced something harrowing, something so moving that he had to leave his family.
The connection to water bodies is also a recurring theme in the trailer, as we see shots of an incredibly large fish which has been killed floating in front of Daniel Day Lewis. The name of the film gives another hint to its connection with water, as ‘Anemone’ doesn’t only mean a type of flower but also a deadly carnivorous invertebrate that resides in the water.
Anemone is coming to theatres on October 3.
