The Punjabi film Mastaney, which was released in theatres on August 25, started off with an opening day collection of Rs 2.30 crore. Directed by Sharan Art, the movie is set in 1739 and portrays the attack on Nadir Shah’s army by Sikh rebels. As reported by Sacnilk, Mastaney might earn around Rs 3.20 crore on its second day.

The film stars Tarsem Singh Jassar, Simi Chahal, Gurpreet Ghuggi, Karamjit Anmol, Baninder Bunny, Honey Mattu, Rahul Dev, Avtar Gill, and Arif Zakaria, among others. Mastaney clashed with Ayushmann Khurrana’s Dream Girl 2, which debuted with Rs 9.70 crore.

On its opening day, Mastaney earned more than Sonam Bajwa’s Godday Godday Chaa, which made Rs 40 lakh on its first day, and Jayy Randhawa’s Medal, which earned Rs 10 lakh. Mastaney fell short in comparison to Gippy Grewal’s Carry on Jatta 3, which had a substantially bigger opening of Rs 4.55 crore. However, Mastaney was released in the Punjabi, Hindi, Tamil, Marathi and Telugu languages.

Writing for Indian Express, Sukhpreet Kahlon called the film an ‘ode to the legendary valour of Sikhs.’ A part of the review read, “Although the legend on which Mastaney is based is a powerful one, the screenplay does not feel fleshed-out enough as it meanders on its way to the climax, which itself is long drawn. Zahoor and Noor’s (Simi Chahal) romantic story seems half-baked and her desire for freedom, a bit peripheral.”
