Bhumika Chawla became an overnight star with her debut film Tere Naam, also starring Salman Khan in the lead role. In the years that followed, Bhumika worked in many Hindi and Telugu films but after she tied the knot in 2007, she took a small break from movies. After a few years, the actor started working again and primarily appeared in Telugu movies. In a recent chat, Bhumika remembered her meeting with Yash Chopra in 2011 when the filmmaker told her that she could have become the equivalent of Madhuri Dixit.
Bhumika shared with Siddharth Kannan that Yash Chopra called her to meet her and told her that he can’t offer her any work because by that point, his son Aditya Chopra was running YRF. Bhumika said that she was delighted to be in Yash Chopra’s company but kept looking at the time. “He asked ‘Are you in a hurry? Are you bored sitting with an old man?’ I felt so embarrassed and I said, ‘Sir, I am taking your time and I’m feeling bad about it. He said, ‘Don’t worry about it.’”
Bhumika further recalled the chat and shared, “He asked, ‘Why did you get married? I said, ‘I did it.’ He asked me about my husband and I told him. He said, ‘Tum toh Madhuri Dixit ban jati (You could have been Madhuri Dixit).’ I said, ‘Sir, you said it and I am it. Just the fact that he said it, for me, that was a big reward, award or whatever you can call it.”
Bhumika Chawla has not appeared in many Hindi films over her 23-year-long career. She was recently seen in Salman Khan starrer Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan.
