Never one to mince words, filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra once publicly criticized Ranbir Kapoor’s script choices, calling them “very stupid.” The moment came during the teaser launch of Sanju, the 2018 biopic of Sanjay Dutt, which was backed by Vidhu and starred Ranbir in the lead role.
At the event, VVC candidly shared his thoughts with reporters: “When I asked them who would play Sanjay Dutt, they showed me Ranbir’s tests and honestly, I couldn’t believe it was Ranbir — and I know Sanju personally. And I am sure through this film, you all will discover that Ranbir is one of the best actors in the country. He is probably the best actor in the country. And I am not one of the guys who would say that. When I say this, I also say that his choice of scripts is very stupid. So, you can imagine I am saying the truth.”
When asked to respond to Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s blunt assessment, Ranbir Kapoor took the remark in stride, acknowledging the ups and downs of his career: “Well, you know, if every actor knew exactly what they were doing and had a plan, then everybody would be a superstar. It’s hard, and I’m trying to learn from my own mistakes. I keep reminding myself: it’s just a bend, not the end.” At the time, Ranbir was coming off a rough patch at the box office, with films like Bombay Velvet, Besharam, Tamasha, Roy, and Jagga Jasoos failing to perform commercially. Vidhu’s comment was likely in reference to this period, which preceded the massive success of Sanju, a turning point in Ranbir’s career.
Since Sanju, however, Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Ranbir Kapoor have not collaborated on another project. That said, both have seen significant individual success in recent years. Vidhu delivered a critically acclaimed hit with 12th Fail, while Ranbir enjoyed blockbuster success with Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal in the same year. Looking ahead, Ranbir is set to star in Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana: Part One and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love and War, both scheduled for release next year. Additionally, there are reports that he may headline the next installment in the Dhoom franchise.
