Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri, who is gearing up for the release of The Bengal Files, recently recalled working with Irrfan Khan and Anil Kapoor on the 2005 film Chocolate, sharing that Irrfan could be a challenging co-actor as he would do something different in every take.

In an interaction with Mashable India, Vivek was asked about what he remembered about working with Irrfan, and the director had nothing but praise for the late actor. He said, “Irrfan was a splendid actor and artiste. When I made a film with him, I could never understand what he was about to do in front of the camera. He would do something else in the rehearsal, something different when the camera was rolling, and then he would do something new the next time you took that shot. I slowly realised that he was a spontaneous actor, and he used to understand the very foundation of a scene and would react accordingly.”

Vivek Agnihotri added that usually Irrfan Khan’s co-stars would be visibly confused while working with him because they didn’t understand what he was doing. Vivek then mentioned to Anil Kapoor and said, “On the other hand was Anil Sahab, and you have seen the way he is; he is a proper showman and someone completely unique. He used to be full of energy all the time, and then if you see Irrfan, he used to look lifeless. Even he (Anil) was very worried looking at Irrfan, thinking that he isn’t doing rehearsal or anything. But you look at their scenes in that film; both of them used to compete with each other. Tu surprise karega? Ab dekh mai karta hoon. (You will surprise me? Now watch this) Anil was a veteran, and he held his own against Irrfan.”

The filmmaker stated that he thoroughly enjoyed working with Irrfan and recalled how he was a completely different person after the shoot was over. He remembered sitting with Irrfan till late at night and just talking till the actor would eventually give up and sleep wherever he was sitting. “Kitni baar toh ham uthakar usse uske kamre tak lekar gaye hai (We have picked him up and taken him to his room a number of times).”

The cast of Chocolate also included Emraan Hashmi, Arshad Warsi, Tanushree Dutta, Suniel Shetty, and Sushma Reddy. It was inspired by the Hollywood film The Usual Suspects by Bryan Singer.
