Actor Vikrant Massey, who made his film acting debut with director Vikram Motwane’s Lootera in 2014, was sure that he’d be fired on the first day after he accidentally hit lead star Ranveer Singh in the face with the nozzle of his prop gun. He recalled the story in a new interview with Galatta Plus, on the sidelines of the release of his new film 12th Fail, directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra.

It took Vikrant 10 years after Lootera to land his first starring role in a film. He was asked what was going through his head on his first day on Motwane’s period drama, which also featured Sonakshi Sinha alongside Ranveer. “I remember very clearly, we were in Film City. It was the bedroom sequence, when Ranveer’s character comes and wakes me up, and I point my gun at him. That was my first day. I was so nervous, I was so intimidated by Vikramaditya Motwane.”

Recalling an anecdote from the day, he continued, “I was overwhelmed after cracking my first film audition, and this was someone I really wanted to work with. And Motwane has that aura about him; highly intellectual, doesn’t speak much. And Ranveer and Sonakshi, a big budget… The moment I pulled my gun out to point at him, the nozzle of the gun grazed his nose. I felt I’m going to get kicked out on the very first day.”

Vikrant was concerned that he had just injured an up-and-coming superstar, who’d now require weeks to recover. “Thankfully, that didn’t happen,” he said. Lootera received critical acclaim, but underperformed at the box office. Motwane said in a recent interview that the expectations from the film became unreasonable because of the talent attached to it.

Vikrant, on the other hand, went on to deliver another critically acclaimed performance in A Death in the Gunj, and achieved mass popularity after appearing in the first season of Prime Video’s Mirzapur. 12th Fail has emerged as a sleeper success, and has earned strong reviews and is delivering steady holds at the box office.
