Vidhu Vinod Chopra can be ‘badtameez’, Yash Chopra loved everyone, Zoya Akhtar told me not to envy her privilege: Anurag Kashyap

Anurag Kashyap revealed what he admires about filmmakers such as Guru Dutt, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, and Yash Chopra.

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, himself well known for his outspokenness, said that he could never do what Vidhu Vinod Chopra often does. Regarded as particularly fiery, Chopra is the filmmaker behind the recent 12th Fail, a movie that Anurag praised when it came out a few years ago. In an interview, he said that he would love to ‘steal’ Chopra’s ‘business sense’ and ‘himmat (courage)’, but he noted that the veteran filmmaker can also be ‘badtameez (rude)’ at times.

In an interview posted on BookMyShow’s YouTube channel, the filmmaker was asked what he admires about three great filmmakers; Guru Dutt, Yash Chopra and Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Speaking about Guru Dutt first, Anurag said, “I would love to borrow his ideas. He could really enter the soul (of the story). My all-time favourite film is Pyaasa, and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam. Abrar Alvi directed Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, but I think these two films are leaps and bounds above the rest.”

Asked about Yash Chopra next, Anurag said, “Of course I love his films Trishul, Deewaar, and Kala Patthar, but I think Lamhe is an extremely underrated film. That movie was trolled before trolling was even a thing. Lamhe is such an evolved film; it’s my favourite film of his, along with Silsila. I don’t think anybody would have the courage to make a movie like Lamhe today. He was a very mature filmmaker. He was such a sweet man. He was always sweet to me, whenever he met me. He would love everybody the same way.”

Finally, coming to Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Anurag said, “The courage that man has, he can do anything, and that too with elan. I can’t do what he does. He has such a strong business sense. He’s like a child. He can be rude sometimes. I don’t know what it is about him; maybe it’s innocence, or childishness, or rudeness, but he has maintained his passion.” Anurag was also asked about his contemporary, Zoya Akhtar. He narrated an anecdote about her. “I was visiting the set of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, and Zoya was shooting with multiple cameras. I asked her what she was doing, and she said something I’ll never forget: ‘Don’t envy me my privilege’. I would like to steal her privilege.”

Not too long ago, Anurag revealed that he was working with Vidhu Vinod Chopra on the film Mission Kashmir, but he left the project midway. In the same interview, praised the filmmaker’s craftsmanship, and said, “The child in him is still alive. His self-obsession and vanity co-exist. There’s one sequence in 12th Fail where Vikrant Massey’s character has gone all the way to (Uttarakhand). It’s a single-shot scene. The way he has designed it, he’s a craftsman. When he’s at his peak craftsmanship, you do admire him.”

After the release of 12th Fail, Anurag took to Instagram to thank VVC for ‘inspiring’ him. He wrote, “Probably the best mainstream film I’ve seen in 2023 @vidhuvinodchoprafilms at the age of 71 has crafted a masterpiece out of a simple story of an adamant man wanting to be more than what life gives him. He goes and takes what he wants and how.”
