The Sabarmati Report box office collection day 1: The substantial criticism faced by director Siva and actor Suriya’s Kanguva, which has significantly affected its box office performance, appears to have indirectly boosted the prospects of director Dheeraj Sarna’s The Sabarmati Report. Starring Vikrant Massey, Raashii Khanna and Riddhi Dogra in the lead roles, The Sabarmati Report made a decent start despite releasing a day after the big-budget Kanguva. In fact, the film grossed over Rs 1 crore on its first day, outperforming recent releases like Janhvi Kapoor’s Ulajh (Rs 1.15 crore), Pankaj Tripathi’s Main Atal Hoon (Rs 1.15 crore), Aayush Sharma’s Ruslaan (Rs 60 lakh), Adah Sharma’s Bastar: The Naxal Story (Rs 40 lakh) and director Dibakar Banerjee’s Love Sex Aur Dhokha 2 (Rs 15 lakh).

On its release day on Friday, The Sabarmati Report recorded an India nett collection of Rs 1.25 crore, as reported by industry tracker Sacnilk. During the day, the film recorded an overall occupancy rate of 16.74 per cent in the Hindi market, starting with 9.58 per cent in the morning, rising to 15.19 per cent in the afternoon, 16.59 per cent in the evening and peaking at 25.58 per cent during the night shows.

The movie continues to perform well and as of 4 pm on Saturday, The Sabarmati Report has eked out Rs 73 lakh during the day, pushing its total domestic earnings to Rs 1.98 crore. Its overall occupancy on Saturday so far stands at 17.18 per cent, with morning shows registering 11.56 per cent and afternoon screenings reaching 22.80 per cent.

While most of Vikrant Massey’s films have had direct-to-OTT releases, he has also appeared in a few movies that hit the big screens first before moving onto streaming platforms. However, not all of these films earned well on their first days and the movies are 12th Fail (Rs 1.11 crore), Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi (Rs 15 lakh), Chhapaak (Rs 4.77 crore), Lipstick Under My Burkha (Rs 1.24 crore), Half Girlfriend (Rs 10.30 crore), Dil Dhadakne Do (Rs 10.53 crore) and Lootera (Rs 5.10 crore).

Interestingly, though The Sabarmati Report has been receiving criticism stating that it’s a propaganda film, the Dheeraj Sarna directorial did not manage to emulate the success of the most successful propaganda movie in recent times, director Sudipto Sen’s The Kerala Story, which earned Rs 8.03 crore in the domestic market.

Based on Godhra train burning incident of 2002, the film is produced jointly by Balaji Motion Pictures and Vikir Films Production, with its distribution handled by Zee Studios. In her review of the movie, SCREEN’s Shubhra Gupta wrote, “After jumping down the throat of those who speak for balance, the Vikrant Massey-Raashii Khanna-starrer tries hard at doing a balancing act. How’s that for more irony?”
