After a teaser that set the tone, a trailer for director Hansal Mehta’s investigative thriller The Buckingham Murders was unveiled on Tuesday. Starring Kareena Kapoor Khan in the lead role, the UK-set film has shades of the popular HBO series Mare of Easttown, starring Kate Winslet. There are also hints of the popular shows The Night Of, Broadchurch, and the podcast Serial’s landmark first season.
The film follows a British-Indian detective named Jasmeet Bamra, who is tasked with solving the murder of a 10-year-old child. The detective is also dealing with intense grief following the death of her own child, and has her back against the wall as communal tensions build with the arrest of a young Muslim man. Jasmeet begins her investigation, which causes skeletons to tumble out of the community’s closet. Most of the film is in the English language, which marks a departure from the norm for Bollywood, as does its frank observation of religious disharmony.
