Taapsee Pannu says getting hugged by Shah Rukh Khan on her birthday during Dunki shoot was the greatest gift she has received

Taapsee Pannu, who will be seen next in Netflix's Phir Ayegi Haseen Dilruba, recalled working with Shah Rukh Khan in Dunki. She called the experience 'relaxing'.

Taapsee Pannu has carved a niche for herself in the film industry by fearlessly embracing women-centric roles that challenge stereotypes and celebrate the strength of women. With each project, she breathes life into diverse characters, showcasing the depth of her acting prowess. Despite carrying several films such as Pink and Thappad on her shoulders, Taapsee says she felt lucky to be acting in a film where she is cast opposite Shah Rukh Khan. The actor was last seen in Rajkumar Hirani’s Dunki alongside the superstar.

“I feel lucky that I got a part where I was not playing a showpiece. Aisa nahin ki agar showpiece jaisa part dete toh main nahin karti. Ek scene wala part bhi dete toh main kar leti (It’s not like I wouldn’t do it if they gave me a part where I had to be a showpiece. Even if they gave me a part with just one scene, I would do it.) With the kind of director and cast, anyone would jump onto the role,” she told Zoom in an interview.

Sharing an interesting anecdote from the sets of  Dunki, Taapsee Pannu said working with Shah Rukh Khan was a dream come true. “It was my birthday, and getting to hug SRK in a scene is the best birthday gift I could ever receive. I went on set telling everyone about it. Getting to do a classic romantic, SRK sequence on my birthday! Can there be any better gift than that? I ran and hugged SRK in 48 frames with round trolleys around us. I will remember this for the rest of my life. I started the day with wiping the floors of a train for a scene, and in the next scene, I am sharing a romantic scene with SRK,” exclaimed Taapsee.

Speaking about her co-star, Taapsee said Shah Rukh is a true gentleman who treats women on the set with respect and ensures that they’re comfortable. She also revealed that she made the most of her time off-screen by listening to and learning from SRK. “I was looking forward to spending time with him off-camera, too. I wanted to sit with him, listen to his experiences which were full of learnings, and get to understand how he managed to come so far from where he began,” said Taapsee, adding, “Shah Rukh shared insightful stories about his 35-year journey in the industry and provided valuable insights into the craft of acting.”

Taapsee Pannu, who recently turned producer and made Dhak Dhak, has been breaking the mould with the choice of scripts, making her a trailblazer in championing women’s stories on the silver screen. However, she revealed that playing such strong parts and working in smaller films come with a price. “You get burnt out and exhausted!” she lamented while speaking about how working on Dunki was a pleasant experience for her where she wasn’t pressured to think about the number of screens her film will get, which is always the case with the Saandh Ki Aankh actor.

“Dunki was a gift that I got from the universe, primarily from Raju sir (Raju Hirani), where I didn’t have to do much and just work between action and cut. You sit back and relax and let everything happen in the best possible way. Working on Dunki was very relaxing. I didn’t have to stress about the marketing of the film or the number of screens it was getting,” she said.

The actor added, “You’re perpetually fighting against the bigger films. It gets draining and you get burnt out. Dunki was like a backseat ki chill ride. People from the best in the business were taking care of everything else. I say I am lucky because I was in the film from start to finish. I think, given that I burnt myself a lot on this journey in the last one decade, this felt like a gift. So I was just being calm.”
