Yesteryear actor Sonam Khan is looking for a comeback. The actor, who shot to fame in 1989 with the film Tridev, in which she featured in the chartbuster track “Tirchi Topi Wale”, says she left the industry after her marriage and moved across the world, looking after her son who was diagnosed with autism at an early age.
Sonam made her debut in the late 80s and continued to act in films till the mid 90s. Three decades later, the actor said she feels like a newcomer and is keen to start working again. “It has been 30 long years, so it feels like a lifetime,” Sonam said in an interview with Bollywood Hungama.
A lot happened in the last three decades for Sonam, which majorly involved dedicating her life to her son. Sonam, whose former husband was filmmaker Rajiv Rai, said she lived in India for some time post her marriage in 1991, before she started travelling all over Europe, America and England and practically living out of a suitcase.
“My life was dedicated to my son, wherever I went was because of him. He is autistic, so I went all around the world looking for treatments and therapies for him and also getting him educated in several places. I had a son even before I was 20, and when he was around four, I learnt that he is autistic. So I left, didn’t even think about anything. My son was my focus and I don’t regret it even on bit.
“But I do regret one thing- that I didn’t value the work which I got earlier. Because sometimes we get things so easily, that we don’t value it. That’s what happened with me. That is something I wish had not happened. But at the same time my son is with me so it has been worth it,” she added.
Sonam, who featured in films like Vijay, Tridev, Ajooba and Vishwatma co-starring Sunny Deol and Divya Bharti, said she is now gearing to return to work and look for good parts. What the actor is very comfortable with, Sonam said, is to “play her age”. Sonam said she will soon turn 51 and is happy that she never went under the knife to enhance her looks.
“You might think I am lying, but till the age of 40, I didn’t think I was pretty. I never thought about it. I was brought up in a family where, especially my mother, looks were never mentioned. I never got that kind of attention too, I think guys are very scared to approach me. I would think maybe people are complimenting me because I am an actor.
“I still don’t take myself seriously, I am going to be 51 in September. I have done no Botox, no fillers, which I can afford, but i don’t want to. I want to play and look my age. I don’t like it when people tell me, ‘Oh you look 35, not 50.’ Ageing is part of the process, and one must accept that,” she added.
