Farah Khan’s Main Hoon Na continues to be one of the most loved films of all time. In a recent interaction, Amrita Rao, who played a pivotal role in the film, recalled her memories of shooting with icons like Shah Rukh Khan and Sushmita Sen as she shared anecdotes about Shah Rukh’s advice and Sushmita’s art of sharing compliments.
Speaking about Shah Rukh with Ranveer Allahbadia on his YouTube channel, Amrita recalled how SRK took time out from shooting another film, Kal Ho Naa Ho, to meet her and her mother. Shah Rukh was shooting for Main Hoon Na and Kal Ho Naa Ho simultaneously. Recalling SRK’s generosity, she said, “He took that one hour of his lunch break to tell me that ‘I have met many newcomers, but you have the quality of being a superstar.’ He said something very profound that ‘200 films will come, but we have to do only two films and that has been my criteria of choosing work.'”
Amrita revealed that Shah Rukh’s first take was often his best during the shooting of the film, and he rarely believed in giving a second take. “He was different at that time. He was funny, the sense of humour comes along with him. But I think he was little reserved, focused and very much into character. What I loved about him was that he was observing that he has newcomers with him, and he took that energy from us, and every single time his first take was the best take, there were no second takes. His temperament was, I don’t want to give a second take. That’s what we learned from him.”
Amrita also recalled that before starting shoot with Sushmita, she met the actor at a party and was overwhelmed by her ‘art of complimenting’ people. She remembered, “After the party, Sushmita offered to drop me home and when we reached, she said, ‘I will come home.’ This was 2 in the morning and in the middle of the night I have Miss Universe sitting on my couch and I can’t believe it. She told my mom, that at the party, there were all these girls and there was Amrita. She also said, ‘When my daughter Renee grows up, I want her to be like you.’ What a compliment from someone I looked up to.”
Speaking about how secure Sushmita is as a person and an actor, Amrita said, “I think she is a rare woman who isn’t insecure of another co-actress. She is full of compliments, positivity and she is encouraging, she says good things to you all the time. I don’t meet women like that. She is very secure in her personality and skin.”
