Ranbir Kapoor comes from the Punjabi Kapoor family and has spoken about his fondness for food on many occasions but back in 2011, Ranbir, during a television show with Kunal Vijayakar, had said that he likes to eat beef and called himself a “big beef fan”. The video did not create any controversy at the time but in the last few years, the video has been circulated on social media umpteen times and usually comes up when Ranbir is in the news for one of his movies. Now, Kunal has spoken about shooting that episode with Ranbir and said that following the incident, Ranbir would never shoot with him again.

Speaking to Cyrus Broacha on his podcast, Kunal said, “Ranbir Kapoor’s interview was over 11-12 years ago.” He said that out of the entire episode, this particular line was picked up by social media. “They picked up this line. Obviously, there are enough people on social media who have nothing better to do,” he said and added that “this was before the whole beef ban.”

Kunal recalled, “We were eating juicy big burgers at Hard Rock Cafe and they picked up this one random statement of his and they put it out.” In the episode, Ranbir had said, “My family is from Peshawar, so a lot of Peshawari food has come with them. I am a mutton, paya, and beef fan. Yeah, I am a big beef fan.”

Kunal Vijayakar shared that he got a “little abuse” for the episode and mentioned an instance when he later ran into Ranbir Kapoor at a restaurant. When Cyrus asked if Ranbir complained about the episode, Kunal said, “Yeah. He will never again come on my show. I’ll never be able to get him.”

In 2022, Ranbir was stopped from entering a temple in Ujjain by Bajrang Dal activists because of his beef statement. The video started circulating on social media again a few months later when it was rumoured that Ranbir might play Lord Ram in Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming Ramayan.
