Ghazal maestro and music legend Pankaj Udhas passed away on Monday in Mumbai after battling a prolonged illness. He was 72 years old. The news of Pankaj’s demise was shared by his daughter, Nayyab, on social media. The singer’s funeral, held on Tuesday at the Hindu Crematorium in Worli, Mumbai, saw many prominent personalities paying their last respects.
Shankar Mahadevan, who recently won a Grammy award, paid his respects at the funeral. Sonu Nigam was photographed visibly emotional during the proceedings, with Punjabi singer Sukhbir and Papon seen accompanying him.
Vishal Bhardwaj and his wife Rekha Bhardwaj bid their final farewell to the legendary singer. Apart from being a prolific filmmaker, Vishal is also a music composer and playback singer. Singer Rekha Bhardwaj, known for her distinct voice and hits like “Namak Ishq Ka” and “Sasural Genda Phool”, also paid her respects.
Former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar was among those who attended the last rites of the ghazal maestro.
Renowned tabla player and composer Zakir Hussain and playback singer Shaan also paid their respects at the funeral.
Pankaj Udhas began his illustrious career with the release of his ghazal album titled Aahat in 1980. He subsequently recorded many hits including Mukarar in 1981, Tarrannum in 1982, Mehfil in 1983, Nayaab in 1985, and Aafreen in 1986. Following his success as a ghazal singer, he was invited to sing for the film Naam by Mahesh Bhatt.
