When Mira Rajput married Bollywood heartthrob Shahid Kapoor in 2015, she instantly became a national talking point. Adding to the intrigue was their age difference: Mira was just 21, while Shahid—who had previously dated Kareena Kapoor—was 34. Even as fans were still processing the news, the couple announced their first pregnancy, welcoming a baby girl in 2016. Mira quickly became a go-to figure for all things motherhood and lifestyle, though not without facing her share of criticism. Yet, behind the scenes, it wasn’t a solo journey. Shahid Kapoor was her steady support system every step of the way.
In a recent conversation with Masoom Minawala, Mira opened up about how Shahid has always been her anchor — and the valuable lessons she has learned from him.
Now 31, Mira is far more than a mother of two or a star wife. Over the past decade, she has evolved into an entrepreneur, launching her skincare brand Akind and Dhun, a luxury wellness sanctuary in Mumbai. And through it all, Shahid — 13 years her senior — has been her biggest cheerleader.
“He has given me confidence,” she said. “Sometimes self-belief comes from within, but other times, there’s someone who tells you, ‘You’ve got this.’ He has always been that voice. Every time I’ve had crazy ideas, he has understood what it takes. He’s like the wind beneath my wings—constantly saying, ‘You got this, do it.’”
She recalled being unsure when brands first began approaching her.
“I still remember my second ad. I wasn’t sure about the product. I was thinking like a mom and said, ‘I don’t want to endorse something I wouldn’t give my kids.’ I was sitting on this high horse saying, ‘I don’t agree with this brand.’ And he told me, ‘I don’t know if you’re doing the right thing. Find the right context. You’re just starting out—…in the beginning, you may not get these opportunities later.’ It was the hard truth, even if not politically correct.”
Fortunately, she took his advice. “He told me to find a way around it—and thank God I did. At that point, he was my reality check.”
Mira also spoke about Shahid’s unwavering commitment to family and routine. “The way he wakes up before sunrise, plans his day, makes sure he’s home to spend time with the kids—it’s inspiring. When he’s travelling, he always calls the kids. If he’s in Delhi, he’ll make it a point to meet my family.”
“He’s a great listener,” she added. “Sometimes you just want to vent without being judged, and he’s that person—but he’s not a blank wall either. He understands, but with a ‘but…,’ and that’s the kind of space I want to be in. Even when he says, ‘Hey, maybe take 30 minutes today and be with the kids’—you need those gentle reality checks.”
Balancing work and family is a shared effort, she emphasised. “We balance it out. Sometimes I have commitments that take me away for a week, and I tell him I can’t move my dates. He’ll look at his schedule and figure something out. It’s tag-teaming. You need to divide and conquer.”
