Salman Khan’s Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan is expected to make between Rs 15 crore-Rs 20 crore on its first day of release, which pales in comparison to the massive numbers that the star is used to, especially for his Eid releases. But the marketplace has changed over the last few years, and if these predictions prove to be true, the film’s opening day numbers will fall in the same range as Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor.
This year, only one Bollywood film has proven to be an undisputed hit at the box office. Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan ended up grossing over Rs 1000 crore worldwide, putting an end to the lean phase that the Hindi film industry had been experiencing. But no film since then has managed to work quite as well. Ajay Devgn’s Bholaa ended up grossing more than Rs 100 crore in India, but once again, it wasn’t a cheap movie to produce.
Salman’s last outright hit was 2017’s Tiger Zinda Hai. Each of his subsequent starring vehicles — Race 3, Bharat, Dabangg 3, Antim: The Final Truth — underperformed. Although Bharat delivered the best opening of his career (Rs 42 crore) and ended up making more than Rs 300 crore worldwide. After KKBKKJ, Salman will reprise his role as the spy Tiger in the third film in the franchise; he also appeared as the character in Pathaan.
KKBKKJ is directed by Farhad Samji, and also features Venkatesh Daggubati, Jagapathi Babu, Pooja Hegde, Shehnaaz Gill, Siddharth Nigam, Raghav Juyal and Palak Tiwari.
