Actor-filmmaker-politician Kangana Ranaut, who is still awaiting the release of her film Emergency, was recently asked about the sale of her controversial property in Mumbai, which was partially demolished by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in 2020. Earlier this month, there were reports that Kangana had sold the multistorey property, which is located in the Pali Hill area of Bandra, for Rs 32 crore. When Kangana was asked about it, she implied that she had to sell the property because her finances are stuck because of the delay in Emergency’s release
Kangana also used the property as an office for her production company, Manikarnika Films. Asked about its sale, the actor immediately told the interviewer that they were asking her “personal questions.” Kangana then said, “Naturally, this was my film that was up for a release so I had my personal property on stake and now it has not released… Well, you use your property at such times only. Like, if you are ever facing bad times, you can sell it. Now you are asking me to offer an explanation for that too.”
During a recent interview with Mashable India, Kangana gave a tour of the Bandra property, and said that it was the kind of place that she always wanted to own. The actor bought the property in 2017 for Rs 20.7 crore, and in December 2022, she took a loan of Rs 27 crore against that property. Days before the sale of the property, Kangana bought an office space for Rs 1.56 crore.
In May, Kangana declared assets worth Rs 91 crore before she contested for the Lok Sabha elections. As per her election affidavit, she declared Rs 28.7 crore in movable assets and Rs 62.9 crore in immovable assets. She also declared gold jewellery of 6.7 kgs, 60 kgs of silver in the form of utensils and jewellery, and diamond jewellery worth Rs 3 crore. She declared three luxury cars – a BMW worth Rs 98 lakh, a Mercedes Benz worth Rs 58 lakh and a Mercedes Maybach worth Rs 3.91 crore. She also declared a Vespa scooter worth Rs 53,000. At the time of filing the affidavit, she had Rs 2 lakh cash and a bank balance of Rs 1.35 crore, and a debt of Rs 17 crore.
In her list of properties that she owned at the time, Kangana declared four commercial units in Chandigarh, a commercial property in Mumbai and a commercial building in Manali. She also declared ownership of three flats in Mumbai worth Rs 16 crore, and a bungalow in Manali, worth Rs 15 crore. The actor claimed that her income for the financial year 2022-23 was Rs 4 crore and in the year before that, she earned Rs 12.3 crore.
