Comedian Rohan Joshi, who was one of the members of the comedy group AIB, recently remembered the time he worked on the party song parody with late actor Irrfan Khan. Joshi shared that it was “amazing” to work with the actor as he recalled an anecdote about Irrfan’s humility.

In the latest episode of Anupama Chopra’s podcast, Rohan shared that Irrfan was having fun during the making of the song. Joshi shared that because of Irrfan’s huge body of work, AIB members thought they should approach him with “care and caution”. He shared that they were surprised when they found that he was someone “who just flows like water”. He said, “Right from the start, he wasn’t like ‘Oh, I am Irrfan Khan’, he was like, ‘I’m having fun’.”

Rohan also shared how Irrfan shot for the song without a vanity van on a hot afternoon in Mumbai’s Madh Island. He shared, “This was when we were still a very small budget organisation. We told him that we can’t get a vanity van for him, it was just not possible, and he said, ‘Boss, don’t worry’. The same room that we were all using, where we did our writing and used as our make-up room, he went to a corner, literally went and lay out a chaddar (bedsheet) on the floor, there were a couple of prop balloons which he knocked up with his finger until he fell asleep and slept for around an hour.”

“When we came to the room, we saw him there, as we watched him I said, ‘If Irrfan Khan is so chill, I am not going to take these Johny come lately new kids in Bollywood come late ever again. If this is how real humilty looks like, coming from a real great, then I am sorry, I am not going to take s**t from twenty-two year olds ever again. I have had the fortune of being so close to the real greatness, true absolute greatness and I have seen true calmness, the humility and ‘relaxness’ of it,” he added.

Rohan then revealed that when Irrfan was in the UK seeking treatment for cancer, he took AIB members out for dinner and wanted to play cricket with them. He described their last meeting with the late actor.

“This is the person who, after the video happened, two years later, he is undergoing treatment in the UK for his illness. We happened to be touring and he called us and told us that he wanted to come for our show and he came to watch our show with his family. He was like, ‘You guys are here, it is so exciting, I want to see you guys,” he recalled.

Rohan recalled that they went out for dinner with Irrfan and they were supposed to play cricket together and for that, Irrfan had booked the nets. “After two days, unfortunately, he got sick and couldn’t join us for cricket. He called us and said, ‘Why don’t you guys go anyway?’ and we were like ‘No, I don’t think that would be right’. And that was, unfortunately, the last time we saw him. He was a delight in every way, he was relaxed and chill in every way. Forever salute,” he shared.

Irrfan’s ‘The Party Song’ with AIB released in 2015. The actor passed away in 2020 after a long battle with cancer.
