Kangana Ranaut has decided to capitalise on two of her professional career’s biggest controversies to promote her new film as producer, Tiku Weds Sheru. While the trailer for the movie featured Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s character making a joke about the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, a new promo includes a mention of Hrithik Roshan.
Kangana’s Mumbai office was partially demolished by the BMC a couple of years ago, which many criticised as a politically motivated action. In the trailer, Nawazuddin’s character, Sheru, refuses to take permission from another character, and reasons, “Are you the BMC that I should take permission from you?” In a new promo video, featuring Nawaz in character as Sheru, there’s a mention of Hrithik Roshan, with whom Kangana was involved in a long-running defamation feud, which she no longer overtly speaks about because the case is subjudice.
The new promo opens with Sheru introducing himself as a ‘big-time Bollywood producer of small films’. To prove his credentials, he shows off pictures of him with the likes of Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan. “Hrithik gaya hua tha isliye nahi hai (Hrithik wasn’t available, that’s why he isn’t here).”
Not just references to Kangana’s life, the new promo also includes a nod to Nawaz’s most popular film, Gangs of Wasseypur Part II, when he he says that he is looking for a woman who can be his wife and take care of his ‘bhai, baap, dada’. Sheru adds that he has no bad habits, over a shot of him having a drink. While the trailer suggests that Tiku Weds Sheru is a quirky romantic comedy about two people who want to make it in the movies, the official trailer description paints a more sinister picture of the film. It reveals that Sheru actually works ‘as a pimp for a local don’, and that he uses his position as a junior artist in the film industry as a front to ‘finds girls for his pimping business’.
Directed by Sai Kabir and also starring debutante Avneet Kaur, Tiku Weds Sheru will be released on Prime Video on June 23.
