When Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna decided to get married, her parents, Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia, weren’t exactly on board with the idea of this union. In an earlier interview, Dimple shared how she wasn’t thrilled with the idea at first but eventually realised that this was perhaps the best decision for Twinkle. She also shared how Akshay is a prankster at home and shared that he is an “amazing man.”
Talking at an event organised by FICCI FLO Jaipur, Dimple shared, “Earlier on, I had my reservations about my daughter getting married to him. Thank God she did.” Describing Akshay as “amazing,” Dimple added, “He is what any aspiring actor would want to be as far as discipline is concerned. He is an amazing man.” She spoke about his kind nature and added, “I see him interacting with a lot of people and he derives so much joy in just sitting and playing basketball or cards with you. He can just sit down and chat with you and make you feel so good. He is naughty to the hilt and he finds me to do these things on.”
In an earlier chat on Tweak India, Twinkle had said that her mother had asked her to live in with Akshay before getting married. “When my husband said he wants to marry me, my mother said, ‘Nothing doing, you live together for two years. If you make it, then you get married’,” she said.
Dimple then shared an anecdote about the time when Akshay tricked her and got her to a surprise birthday party. “Once he told me that I have to go to Delhi to meet Mrs Sonia Gandhi and I don’t want to go alone so please come with me. Ma can’t speak two words and voh maa ko leke jaa raha hai (and he is taking mother). Now he has asked me to come, I can’t say no,” she said. Dimple said she was ready on time and as Akshay landed to pick her up, he remembered that he had forgotten to get his wallet so they went to his house to get it. Akshay asked her to come inside so she could meet the kids while he looked for his wallet. And as Dimple stepped in, she realised this was all a ruse to get her to her surprise 50th birthday party. “So I come in and there’s a huge party for me, it’s my 50th. And he pulls this off with me every time,” she recalled with a laugh.
Twinkle and Akshay got married in 2001. They are parents to son Aarav and daughter Nitara.
