Dhruv Rathee says he was ‘wrong’ to celebrate Gangs of Wasseypur after slamming Dhurandhar, Ranvir Shorey calls him fake

YouTube creator Dhruv Rathee criticised the trailer for the Ranveer Singh led Dhurandhar for the graphic violence it portrayed. Ranvir Shorey defended the film and its director Aditya Dhar, leading to a Twitter war.

While many were excited to finally see the trailer for the Ranveer Singh-led Dhurandhar, YouTube creator Dhruv Rathee chose to speak against it. He argued that director Aditya Dhar was encouraging and normalising violence through the film and urged the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to take a stand. He particularly pointed at the Dhurandhar trailer’s opening scene that has a man being tortured with wires strung from multiple holes in his skin. However, not everyone agreed with his point of view, including actor Ranvir Shorey.

In a previous post on X (formerly Twitter), Dhruv had written, “Aditya Dhar has truly crossed a limit of cheapness in Bollywood. The extreme violence, gore and torture shown in his latest film trailer is the equivalent of watching ISIS beheadings and calling it ‘entertainment.’” He had further said that the director was blinded by his lust for money. The creator then called the CBFC and said, “This is the chance for the Censor Board to show if they have a bigger problem with people kissing or watching someone get skinned alive.”

Upon seeing his comments, netizens were soon to point out that Rathee had once made a video where he called Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur one of the most important Indian films. The irony lies in the fact that GOW is also an extremely violent film and has been called out for the same reason several times. Rathee replied to the critique and said, “I was wrong; back then I didn’t understand the impact such films have on society.”

Actor Ranvir Shorey jumped into the conversation and replied to Rathee, saying, “Buddy, you’re wrong most of the time. But I love how you’ve turned that into a career.” The verbal altercation continued as Rathee replied, “Better than a career where you have to do fake fights on Bigg Boss for a livelihood.” Shorey didn’t back down and wrote, “The fights in the BB house are not half as fake as you, buddy. Lage raho.”

Several fans showed support to the Khosla Ka Ghosla actor and asked him to stop responding to Rathee. The actor argued that he didn’t want to “engage” with Rathee, but he had to because the creator was “sabotaging a film and filmmaker.” There were many who supported Rathee in the whole episode and said that Shorey was just picking this fight to get attention.
