More than 14 years have passed since “King of Pop” Michael Jackson departed, but the enduring influence he had on the world of art continues to radiate.
In 1996, amidst global acclaim and a multitude of fans eagerly waiting to attend his live performances, Michael Jackson made a special appearance in Mumbai as part of his ‘HIStory World Tour.’
Bollywood actor Anupam Kher recently shared a heartwarming memory of his encounter with the global superstar during that time. He posted a cherished photograph of himself alongside MJ and penned an adorable message.
Dubbing MJ’s concert in Mumbai as magical, Kher noted that on the day following the performance, around 25 chosen guests received an exclusive opportunity to engage with the King of Pop for half an hour on the terrace gardens of Hotel Oberoi. “I was over the moon at the mere thought of meeting one of the greatest performers of our times at such close quarters,” he noted.
Recalling the event, Kher shared that all the chosen guests arrived at the hotel at least an hour ahead of the scheduled meeting time. He noted, “There was a small platform erected as a kind of temporary stage. We were waiting- breathlessly. He finally arrived surrounded by his personal bodyguards. Tall & Tough!”
Expressing that they were left speechless and filled with admiration upon seeing the star, Kher mentioned that while Michael Jackson graciously smiled at them, they found themselves awkwardly gazing back. He reflected, “I thought this was a historical moment in my life. I can’t just stand there. I must at least shake his hands if not hug him.”
Observing that there was a barrier separating them from MJ, Kher further recalled how he took the initiative to break the barrier and step onto the stage. “Realising that I had invaded the stage unannounced and not knowing who I was Michael’s bodyguards were about to pounce on me and throw me away,” he mentioned.
Fortunately, luck was on Kher’s side as the show’s promoter, Bharat Shah, exclaimed in panic: “Don’t!!! He is the BIGGEST SUPERHERO OF THE COUNTRY,” hearing which MJ’s guards stopped.
“#MJ held my hand softly. Acknowledged me respectfully,” Kher noted.
“At exact that moment somebody clicked the pic. And history got created. For ME! All other guests just stood there. FROZEN!! 😬❤️😍🙌 #KuchBhiHoSaktaHai,” he added.
Born as Michael Joseph Jackson in 1958 as the eighth child of Joe and Katherine Jackson, MJ is regarded as one of the most significant cultural figures of the 20th century. He died on June 25, 2009, from cardiac arrest.
