After the passing of former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on Thursday, Bollywood actor Anupam Kher and filmmaker Hansal Mehta got involved in a heated argument on social media. The duo, who worked together on the 2019 political drama The Accidental Prime Minister, which was based on Singh’s tenure as PM, got in a spat on X, after Hansal endorsed a post by veteran journalist Vir Sanghvi which criticised the film.
Veteran journalist Vir Sanghvi spoke about the “lies” that were spread about the former PM through that film and called it “one of the worst Hindi movies ever made.” He also called it an “example of how media was used to tarnish the name of a good man.” Vir’s remarks were supported by Hansal as he retweeted the post and wrote “+100.”
This seemed to have upset Anupam Kher, who played Manmohan Singh in the film, and he readily called out Hansal’s “double standards” and reminded him that he was Creative Director on the film. Anupam categorically said Hansal was a part of the shoot and gave his creative inputs on the film. He wrote, “The HYPOCRITE in this thread is NOT @virsanghvi. He has the freedom to not like a film. But @mehtahansal was the #CreativeDirector of #TheAccidentalPrimeMinister. Who was present at the entire shoot of the film in England! Giving his creative inputs and must have taken the fee also for it. So for him to say 100% to #VirSanghvi’s comment is so messed up and full of double standards! Not that I agree with Mr. Sanghvi but we are all capable of doing bad or indifferent work. But we should OWN it. Not like #HansalMehta trying to earn some brownies from certain section of people. Common Hansal!! Grow up! I still have all our videos and pics of the shoot together!”
Hansal responded to Anupam and said that he was hired as a professional and he did his job to the best of ability. He also implied that doing this film was a mistake and wrote, “Of course I own my mistakes Mr Kher. And I can admit that I made a mistake. Can’t I sir? I did my job as professionally as I was allowed to. Can you deny that? But it doesn’t mean I have to keep defending the film or that it makes me lose objectivity about my error of judgement. About brownie points and hypocrisy I respectfully submit that you seem to be evaluating people by the same yardstick you evaluate yourself.”
Hansal also apologised to Anupam and wrote, “Apologies if I’ve inadvertently hurt you.” Since then, Anupam has dug out many old tweets by Hansal where he praised the actors and the team of The Accidental Prime Minister for making the film. He has reposted many of these tweets with the comment, “Without comments.”
