Singer Amar Singh Chamkila, who was popularly known as the ‘Elvis of Punjab’, was only 27 years old when he was shot by unknown assailants in Punjab. Chamkila was about to perform with his wife Amarjot in the town of Mehsampur when masked men arrived on a bike and shot at their group. Chamkila’s first wife Gurmail Kaur, in a recent interview, opened up about meeting Chamkila and Amarjot just a few days before their death. She said that she could foresee that something bad was about to happen.
In a chat with YouTube channel Cine Punjabi, Gurmail said that Chamkila and Amarjot paid her a visit just two days before they died. She recalled what happened that day, and said that she was making chapatis while Amarjot was chopping vegetables when she got an eerie feeling. When she later shared it with her father-in-law, she asked if he felt the same, but he said that he didn’t. Even Amarjot noticed that something was wrong, and asked Gurmail what she was thinking, but she didn’t share her premonition with her.

Gurmail also spoke about how Chamkila’s death affected her financially. “It was a very difficult time in my life,” she said, revealing that she even worked as a daily wage worker for Rs 5 per day. When asked if Chamkila’s well wishers and fans offered help when she was struggling financially, Gurmail said no one came forward to help her out.
“I was so proud of him. He was so famous, I had nothing to worry about,” she said, mentioning that she never visited his akhadas. She also shared that despite getting married to Amarjot, he fulfilled all his responsibilities towards her and her kids. He took care of them financially and also bought them a piece of land. Amar Singh Chamkila had two daughters with Gurmail.
Imtiaz Ali’s film, based on the life of the late singer, is currently streaming on Netflix. Diljit Dosanjh stars in the titular role in the film.
