The Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) has unleashed a wave of accusations, alleging harassment and medical negligence that reportedly led to the death of six patients at Mumbai’s JJ Hospital. The MARD has declared an indefinite strike, demanding the immediate removal of the head of the dermatology department, Dr Mahindra Kura.
The resident doctors have boycotted outpatient department (OPD) duties, intensifying their protest against the alleged misconduct. Emergency care remains operational amidst the growing tension.
Simultaneously, the Department of Medical Education and Research (DMER) has formed a committee to investigate the disturbing allegations. The committee has conducted rigorous interviews with all faculty members of the dermatology department at JJ and GT Hospital, including the resident doctors.
This scandal is not the first time Dr Mahindra Kura has faced such serious allegations. Previous complaints from faculty members have apparently gone unanswered, indicating a history of unchecked mistreatment.
Speaking to The Indian Express, resident doctors detailed instances of Dr Kura allegedly deviating from evidence-based medical practices, risking patients’ lives. One shocking example cited involved the prescription of 1,000 mg of steroids daily for three consecutive days, well above recommended limits, potentially triggering life-threatening complications.
The department faculty has rallied behind the protesting students, adding weight to their claims. However, the MARD contends that the medical education department has failed to act even ten days after the initial complaint, intensifying the standoff.
Despite a DMER committee being in action since Friday, no substantial progress has been reported. “As of today, which marks the 11th day since the complaint, there has been no substantial progress in resolving the issue. In response, residents of the dermatology department are taking mass leave, citing immense pressure and the unmet demand for action,” said DMER in a statement issued on Tuesday.
The dermatology department’s residents are taking mass leave, citing pressure and an unmet demand for action. The MARD has issued an ultimatum, threatening an indefinite strike if the head of dermatology is not removed.
Adding fuel to the fire, the medical student association has accused Dr Kura of harassment, citing professional misconduct, mental health abuse, and toxic work culture. Numerous residents have reportedly turned to antidepressants and mood stabilizers to cope with the distress, raising concerns about the overall well-being of the hospital staff.
The DMER committee is expected to submit its report by the weekend. Meanwhile, DMER has asked the students to return to duty.
