Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Friday said the state government is considering a ban on some “aggressive” breeds of dogs, which tend to attack people.
Speaking at an event to mark the “World Rabies Day” after launching rabies-free vaccination campaign, Sawant said, “There are some breeds of dogs who are very aggressive and they attack people. The government is contemplating to impose a ban on their adoption.”
Urging people to get their pet dogs vaccinated, Sawant said people must take precautions while bringing dogs from other states and vaccinate the dogs regularly.
Citing a recent incident where a Rottweiler pet dog had jumped over the gate of a house near Caranzalem and attacked two children, leaving one of them grievously injured, Sawant said the government intends to make Goa “rabies-free” and called on people to cooperate.
“The static point vaccination campaign intends to vaccinate every dog in the state, wherein people have to cooperate with the stakeholders of Mission Rabies, who will conduct a door-to-door campaign,” said Sawant.
The CM said the government is starting a programme for sterilisation of street dogs in to control population of dogs.
“We have to initiate further steps towards the control of the dog population in Goa. If the population of street dogs grows a lot, we will face trouble. There has been a rise in incidents of dog bites… On an average, there are at least one or two accidents [due to street dogs] daily,” he added.
