The Karnataka police have booked a schoolteacher in Mangaluru for allegedly making derogatory statements about Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Lord Ram in class and the school has dismissed her.

Sister Prabha, who taught at St Gerosa English Higher Primary School in Mangaluru, allegedly used cusswords for Lord Rama and Modi while holding a class about “work is worship” for Class 7 students on February 8.

Many parents and right-wing activists protested in front of the school demanding action against the teacher after a few students informed their parents about the remarks.

While the block education officer has started an inquiry, a parent named Sharath Kumar has got an FIR registered at the Mangalore South police station against the schoolteacher.

On Monday, the school authorities said in a statement that it had dismissed Sister Prabha and would hire another teacher for her position. “St Gerosa School has a history of 60 years and never in its history has such an incident taken place. We have been followers of the Constitution and also accept the faith and practices of all the religions. We request the public to drop the incident and to join hands with the school for betterment of the future,” a letter written by the headmistress of the school said.
