In view of the communal tension prevailing in the state following the Shahpur incident in Ahmedabad, the Vadodara police have organised a T-20 cricket tournament in the city. The police will also take part in the tournament which began on Sunday. Over 32 teams from the city will participate in the event, said the police.

Makarpura Inspector R M Bhadoriya said the matches — to be played from evening till night — have been named ‘Qaumi Ekta Cricket Tournament’,and represent the communal harmony in Vadodara.

“Incidents in Shahpur are creating a bad impression for our state. Since cricket acts as a bridge between communities as well as the police and public,we are organising the event. We hope to turn this into an annual event,” said Bhadoriya.

Over 32 teams have registered themselves for the tournament in which eight teams representing Vadodara Collectorate,Vadodara Commissionerate,Health Department and media have been invited to play at the State Reserve Police Group One ground in the Lal Baugh area.

A sum of Rs 5,000 has been charged from the teams as registration fee.
